Oak Alley Plantation

Oak Alley Plantation

Located on the Mississippi River between the historic Louisiana cities of New Orleans and Baton Rouge, Oak Alley Plantation has been called the "Grande Dame of the Great River Road".

Nowhere else in the south will you find such a spectacular setting!

The quarter-mile canopy of giant live oak trees, believed to be nearly 300 years old, forms an impressive avenue leading to the classic Greek-revival style antebellum home.

JAGUAR or FORD ?

JAGUAR or FORD ?

I simply loved this car when i spotted it at the Haig Vintage Car Rally on 24th Feb 2008 at Mumbai - India. The car was in pristine condition with sparkling chrome. Note the sunshade on the windscreen and the additional light on the front right pillar and the rubber mud flaps. All these accessories give you a feeling that the car is used daily and is not just another show piece that is kept in an enclosed garage.
I would love to own this car, what about u ?

The Sylph of "Justice" in the Royal Exhibition Building - Melbourne

The Sylph of

In 1901, eight paintings of elegant women draped in costumes and known as sylphs were installed around the four central piers of Melbourne's Royal Exhibition Building in preparation for the opening of the very first Federal Parliament.

The sylphs representing the four seasons, Morning, Night, Truth and Justice were painted by Gordon Coutts, George Dancey, Girolamo Nerli and Leon Pole. Allegorical figures, usually women, were widely used to represent nations, values, stories and themes. In 1901 many people would have immediately recognised their symbolic associations. According to contemporary newspaper reports of the day, the artists had originally supplied the sylphs with less clothing than they are depicted in today. On viewing the paintings, the Victorian trustees insisted on the figures being shimmered over with more drapery, to protect the morals of those who viewed them!

The Royal Exhibition Building was designed by the architect Joseph Reed, who also designed the Melbourne Town Hall and the State Library of Victoria. According to the architect, the design was inspired by many different sources. The dome was modeled on the Florence Cathedral, while the main pavilions were influenced by the style of Rundbogenstil and several buildings from Normandy, Caen and Paris.

The foundation stone was laid by the then Victorian governor George Bowen on 19 February 1879 and it was completed in 1880, ready for the Melbourne International Exhibition. The building consisted of a Great Hall of over 12,000 square metres and many temporary annexes. In the 1880s, the building hosted two major International Exhibitions; the Melbourne International Exhibition in 1880 and the Melbourne Centennial Exhibition in 1888 to celebrate a century of European settlement in Australia. The most significant event to occur in the Exhibition Building was the opening of the first Parliament of Australia on 9 May 1901, following the inauguration of the Commonwealth of Australia on 1 January. After the official opening, the federal government moved to the Victorian State Parliament House, while the Victorian government moved to the Exhibition Building for the next 26 years. On 3 September, the Australian National Flag was flown at Royal Exhibition Building for the first time. On that day Prime Minister Edmund Barton announced the winners of a competition to design a flag for Australia. The buildings were a venue for the 1956 Summer Olympics, hosting the basketball, weightlifting, wrestling, and the fencing part of the modern pentathlon competitions. As it decayed, it became known derogatively by locals as The White Elephant in the 1940s and by the 1950s, like many buildings in Melbourne of that time it was earmarked for replacement by office blocks. In 1948, members of the Melbourne City Council put this to the vote and it was narrowly decided not to demolish the building. The wing of the building which once housed Melbourne's aquarium burnt down in 1953. During the 1940s and 1950s, the building remained a venue for regular weekly dances. Over some decades of this period it also held boat shows, automobile shows and other regular home and building industry shows. It was also used during the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s for State High School Matriculation and for the Victorian Certificate of Education examinations, among its various other purposes. Nevertheless, the grand ballroom was demolished in 1979, leaving the main structure in place along with annexes constructed in the 1960s and 1970s. Following the demolition of the grand ballroom, there was a public outcry which prevented the main building from also being demolished.

During a visit to Victoria in 1984, Princess Alexandra (Queen Elizabeth II's cousin) bestowed the royal title on the building and it has been referred to as the Royal Exhibition Building ever since. This title, and the first conservation assessment of the building undertaken by Alan Willingham, sparked a restoration of the interiors of the building in the late 1980s and 1990s, and the construction of a mirror glass annexe (which was later demolished). In 1996, the then Premier of Victoria, Jeff Kennett, proposed the location and construction of Melbourne's State Museum on the adjacent site. Temporary annexes built in the 1960s were removed and in 1997 and 1998, the exterior of the building was progressively restored.

On 1 July 2004, the Royal Exhibition Building and Carlton Gardens was granted listing as a World Heritage Site, the first building in Australia to be granted this status. The heritage listing states that "The Royal Exhibition Building is the only major extant nineteenth century exhibition building in Australia. It is one of the few major nineteenth century exhibition buildings to survive worldwide."

The quarterdeck, and, as the enemy's numbers were counted, they were duly reported to hi

Res, in flowing mantles and draperies, moving down the huge hall. A
semicircle of beds filled the extremity of the chapel, which had been
vacated by a draft of unfortunate beings, carried off during the day to
that dreadful tribunal, whose sole employment seemed to be the supply of
the axe, and from which no one was ever expected to return. While my
eyes, with a strange and almost superstitious anxiety--such is the
influence of time and place--followed this extraordinary train, I saw it
take possession of the range of beds; each new possessor sitting wrapt
in his pale vesture, and perfectly motionless. I can scarcely describe
the singular sensations with which I continued to gaze on the spectacle.
My eyes sometimes closed, and I almost conceived that the whole was a
dream; but the forms were too distinct for this conjecture, and the
question with me now became, "are they flesh and blood?" I had not sunk
so far into reverie as to imagine that they were the actual spectres of
the unhappy tenants of those beds on the night before, all of whom were
now, doubtless, in the grave; but the silence, the distance, the dimness
perplexed me, and I left the question to be settled by the event. At a
gesture from the central figure they all stood up--and a man loaded with
fetters was brought forward in front of their line. I now found that a
trial was going on: the group were the judges, the man was the presumed
criminal; there was an accuser, there was an advocate--in short, all the
general process of a trial was passing before my view. Curiosity would
naturally have made me spring from my bed and approach this
extraordinary spectacle; but I am not ashamed now to acknowledge, that I
felt a nervelessness and inability to speak or move, which for the time
wholly awed me. All that I could discover was, that the accused was
charged with _incivisme_, and that, defying the court and disdaining the
charge, he was pronounced guilty--the whole circle, standing up as the
sentence was pronounced, and with a solemn waving of their arms and
murmur of

123 Macalister Rd - Penang - 1920s

123 Macalister Rd - Penang - 1920s

Macalister Rd, Penang.
Named after Colonel Norman Macalister, a close confidant of Penang's founder Captain Francis Light, this tree-lined road accommodates spacious European-style bungalows set amongst surrounding gardens. Many of the old houses remain occupied; sadly, some have been demolished over time and others, like this one sit forlornly empty awaiting its fate. The wooden louvred shutters have long since vanished along with wooden doors and anything transportable. Even whilst derelict and seemingly unloved, the detailed yet fading beauty of this structure is clearly visible.

The architectural style is typical of the residences found in Penang and throughout the Straits Settlements. It combines European architectural idiom (particularly Palladian elements) with Chinese and Malay styles with adaptations to the tropical climate for ventilation and protection from sun and rain; louvred French windows, high ceiling interiors, clerestorey windows, porte-cochere and the use of air-wells or internal courts. At the turn of the 20th century, the Peranakan Chinese (or Straits Chinese) community were the elite stratum of society in Penang; Educated, English-speaking and highly westernised. The facade of these residences often carried highly detailed ornamentation to convey the wealth of the occupant. The fusion of architectural styles created the local architectural style named "Straits Eclectic" which can be found in Penang, Malacca and Singapore and throughout the Malay Peninsula.

Nemacolin Castle

Nemacolin Castle

Overlooking the Monongahela River, Nemacolin Castle stands proudly as silent witness to Brownsville’s historic past.
Within the spacious interior are twenty-two furnished rooms which reflect early life in America from Colonial times to the late Victorian era. Included in the collection are many original Bowman family furnishings.

In 1789, Jacob Bowman, a pioneer merchant from Hagerstown, Maryland, built a frontier trading post on the approximate site of Old Fort Burd. Active in business and commerce, Bowman was an important figure in the early development of Brownsville.
In 1795 President Washington named Bowman Brownsville’s first postmaster. In the years that followed, a mansion was built around the simplistic trading post. For several generations, the castle was home to the Bowman family.

Today, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is open to the public. Nemacolin Castle stands in the block between Brashear and Front Streets in Brownsville, Pennsylvania.

211/365: the p&s will no longer do

so after dinner i grab the camera and head for the back door for today's shot. before i can get to the door though, the six year old says "dad, can i come with you and use your other camera?" i say, "what about your camera?" she replies "i like yours better" what's a dad to do??? of course you can. so i put it on Program mode and off she went.

she's becoming quite the little shutterbug, and i'm happy she's so enthusiastic (with the camera strap securely around her neck of course). it really does warm my heart that the girls (well, 3 of the 4 anyway) are taking an interest. the 11 year old is really good in LR and has a working knowledge of aperture, shutter speed and fixed vs zoom lenses. the 6 year old is learning LR as well and it's amazing how fast they can pick it up.

the 4 year old below, not to be outdone, had her camera out and was directing me for poses (not sure where she learned that from...). I was holding flowers, leaves, in the shade, in the light, making funny faces until her memory card was full. note to self, replace her card with a smaller one.

Raindrop lenses Project 365(3) Day 284b

When the rain finally stopped and the sky brightened, I noticed that the raindrops on the window were acting like little lenses giving me an almost perfect upside down image of the world outside.

The blue at the top is the pool cover, the cream strip is the pool surround followed by the fencing and at the bottom of the images is the sky. You can even make out the palm tree in the corner and the decorative plaques on the wall. These raindrops lenses are pretty good, I reckon they are equivalent to about 24mm, I wonder what f stop they work at?

Painting on glass -Nicolae Groza

Painting on glass -Nicolae Groza

The technique of painting on glass was practiced throughout Europe and as far as India, China and Japan.
We find wonderful examples of Western European art during the Renaissance in Italy France and Spain as well as in the Low Countries and in Central Europe.
In Georgian Britain the art of "transfers" of engravings onto glass was a different, yet related technique. Also famous are the 19th c East Anglian school of naive paintings on glass in maple frame depicting "Dutch scenes" with windmills.

In Bohemia, Slovakia, Hungary, Austria, Southern Poland but also in Italy, Spain and Portugal religious representations on glass, produced by naive artists, survivesto the present day. Despite their cultural and geographical differences hey have many common traits.
In Orthodox countries we find icons on glass especially in Transylvania. The technique is carried on to the present day.

Nicolae Groza, a Romanian artist, now living in Belgium, near Liege, follows the tradition of Transylvanian icon painters on glass. Groza's themes borrow symbols, motifs and the graphism of the old icons, yet he is inspired from non-religious subjects - from folk legends and historical characters.
Nicoale has an extraordinary sense of humour, imagination and a high artistry which sets him apart from his contemporaries. He has held many individual and group exhibitions of these works which are in private collections in England, Belgium, Romania, Germany, France.
Nicolae Groza's main form of expression are huge murals, mozaics, decorative panels in ceramics.
His oil paintings are to be found in Musems and private collections in Europe.

Painted Glass

Painted Glass

Painted Glass

Five centuries have blotched a patina
Of algae across their faces. The eyes,
Though blemished, join mother, child
In a gaze that seems eternal.

Watch now: a modernist painter
Working in wax repel – it dries,
Mottled as alga; a coloured mould
Spreads like something elemental,

His pigments pure as glazes
And figures still arranged
Like puppets: Joseph, polite
Behind his pillar – now crayoning

The ox, the ass, with hieratic gazes.
They crane their necks, unchanged
By centuries: the palette
Still as primary, her cradling

Quite as gentle.

Poem by Giles Watson, 2011.

Waterfall

So i got tagged to write ten favorite lyrics. The last three will be lyrics of my own. haha.

1. "Try to pretend that I never even knew your name
'cause everything you are disgusts me" - ADTR - Plot to Bomb the Panhandle ( i can relate to this haha)

2. "Just look back on, How far we've come, We've made it somehow, Look where we are now, All we've done, Our battles won, We've made it somehow, Look where we are now." - Hoobastank - Look Where We Are

3. " Then again, you're always first when no one's on your side, But then again, a day will come when I want off that ride." - Incubus - 11AM

4. " One of these days letters are gonna fall from the sky telling us all to go free, But until that day I'll find a way to let everybody know that you're coming back, you're coming back for me, 'Cause even though you left me here I have nothing left to fear, These are only walls that hold me here - Civil Twilight - Letters From the Sky

5. " Does it hurt to remember, Does it help to forget, Do you know what you started, When you lit the fuse of regret - Def Leppard - Paper Sun

6. " Im holding your hand, we’re in the front row, Stars are falling, and im never gonna let go, Sound the warning, if you only knew,, I’ll be okay as long as I’ve got you. - New Medicine - End of the World

7. " Who's to blame for the life that tragedies claim, No matter what you say it don't take away the pain , That I feel inside, I'm tired of all the lies, Don't nobody know why, It's the blind leadin' the blind, Guess that's the way that the story goes, Will it ever make sense somebody's gotta know - P.O.D. - Youth of the Nation

8. " Ive been waiting, For that light to find me here, Your unbreakable code im translating, You need me to disappear, This obsession that im hating, Missing what's obviously clear, The memories we are creating, They begin to interfere - My Own Lyrics - Untitled ( Cant find one yet haha)

9. " Nothing left, nothing shown, time to rewind, I cant remember the last time I had a clear mind, I don’t know who im looking for, Im sure Ill never find you, Ill never know for sure - My Own Lyrics - Rewind

10. " Looking back, I can admit, That I might have taken it to the heart, Even in reality, it still feels the same, And in your admiration, im the one to blame, If only I could make up my mind - My Own Lyrics - Admiration (dont know about this one.)

That took forever!

Day 401 - Day 036

Day 401 - Day 036

“Everyone's got to face down the demons, Maybe today, We can put the past away”
Jumper: Third Eye Blind, Third Eye Blind

I still remember the first time that I heard this song, how blown away I was, and I remember stepping back asking myself “Who the hell is this??” I was amazed at the simplicity of the song, especially in the solo. The build up that it comes to, erupting out of a soft string of note picking, just blows me away, as does the subject of the song. I love the emotion in the singer’s voice and the power that surrounds him.

I love the line about the demons that we face- an ironic twist is that I have had a lot of discussions about the demons we face in our past and present. Who knows, maybe we as a society and as a world can put the past away. While I have not lost people to jumping, I have had people in and around my life take their own life and it always saddens made how little the appreciate the gift we are given.

*** Artist Notes ***
Taken on a bridge outside San Antonio… the photographer was at no time in danger of jumping or falling LOL.

Lyrics:
I wish you would step back from that ledge my friend,
You could cut ties with all the lies, that you've been living in,
And if you do not want to see me again, I would understand.
I would understand,

The angry boy, a bit too insane,
Icing over a secret pain,
You know you don't belong,
You're the first to fight, You're way too loud,
You're The flash of light, On a burial shroud,
I know something's wrong,
Well everyone I know has got a reason, To say, put the past away,

I wish you would step back from that ledge my friend,
You could cut ties with all the lies, That you've been living in,
And if you do not want to see me again, I would understand,
I would understand.

Well he's on the table, And he's gone to code,
And I do not think anyone knows,
What they are doing here,
And your friends have left, You've been dismissed,
I never thought it would come to this, And I, I want you to know,
Everyone's got to face down the demons,
Maybe today, We can put the past away,

I wish you would step back from that ledge my friend,
You could cut ties with all the lies, that you've been living in,
And if you do not want to see me again, I would understand,
I would understand,
I would understand...

Can you put the past away, I wish you would step back from that ledge my friend,
I would understand...

Shades Of Dark Blonde Hair

shades of dark blonde hair

    blonde hair
  • indicates a guide. Whatever they say in the dream is infallible. However, if the hair is dyed blonde it indicates a sham – either you or someone in your life is pretending to be pure of thought.

  • Blond (see below) or fair-hair, is a hair color characterized by low levels of the dark pigment eumelanin. The resultant visible hue depends on various factors, but always has some sort of yellowish color.

  • is not as visible, but it's also harder to treat. Lasers have limited effects on it because of its lack of pigment, and it is difficult to see against the skin during plucking or electrolysis.

    shades of
  • something that reminds you of someone or something; "aren't there shades of 1948 here?"

  • Shades Of is the first album by funeral doom band Shape of Despair. Unlike their other albums, it has a mainly solid guitar sound all the way through that is constantly played. Their more recent releases, for example Illusion's Play have more ambience.

    dark
  • Ignorant; unenlightened

  • With little or no light

  • devoid of or deficient in light or brightness; shadowed or black; "sitting in a dark corner"; "a dark day"; "dark shadows"; "dark as the inside of a black cat"

  • iniquity: absence of moral or spiritual values; "the powers of darkness"

  • Hidden from knowledge; mysterious

  • absence of light or illumination

New! Hair!

New! Hair!

I only get my hair cut and colored twice a year. Because it gets so yellow-y blonde from all my time spent outdoors running and on assignment in warm-weather locales, I darken it each time I see my stylist, as oppose to getting highlights. I went a shade darker here than usual--hello winter! I have a severe scissor phobia, so I always go for the same cut: a two-inch trim and random layers all over.

(Note: I maybe wear makeup twice a month, because I don't feel like I normally need it. The eye bags in this photo indicate otherwise. However, I'm just going to chock it up to bad lighting and the fact that I'm heavily medicated for a handful of illnesses at the moment.)

and then we dyed the underside this brown color, but we're prbly gonna re do that too to make it even darker lol
and by we i mean katelyn cause she's the one who dyes my hair : ) <3

Old Ice Cream man

Old Ice Cream man

I used to buy Ice Cream from this man when I was 6 years old. He still sells Ice Cream on a three wheeled refrigerated cart (not motorized) at the same area where I used to live. I saw him and took the opportunity to say hello and take some photos. Ice Cream men like him usually stand in the heat of summer with only an Umbrealla to shade them, and they do it from about 10 A.M to 5 P.M every day during the summer season.

He did smile in other photos but he has no teeth so I thought it was best to post this one. He told me he worked this job for 30 years in Kuwait.

Welcome to my front door. I forgot it was purple LOL! Purple is one of my favorite colors and the shutters and front door of our house where purple when we bought it. They all need a face lift and I think I am going to paint them black in the Spring (although today I remembered how much I loved that they were a shade of purple...hmmm decisions). Oh by the way, my egg wreath has seen better days. I think it might be time for a little craft project with the kids.

Singapore
.
.
.
.
The building was designed by two architectural firms working in conjunction: by the London-based Michael Wilford & Partners (MWP) and by DP Architects (DPA) of Singapore. The original design, presented to the public in 1994, consisted of unadorned glass cases over the theaters. Such a design would have created a greenhouse in the tropical climate of Singapore, but according to DPA director Vikas Gore some form of shading was always intended, and a cladding of aluminum sunshades was added to the final design. The unique architectural design has been said to have an appearance similar to either a durian (a tropical fruit) or the eyes of a fly. Many Singaporeans casually refer to the Esplanade as "The Durian".
